The Oregon Coast is one of the most scenic coastlines in the world and the perfect place for landscape photography. In 1967 the Oregon Legislature passed a landmark bill making the entire 364 miles of the coastline open to the public. This means that landscape photographers can travel and photograph the entire coastline. From the mouth of the Columbia River to Brookings the Oregon Coast is one of the most beautiful stretches in the world. Some of the highlight include Ecola State Park, Haystack Rock, Short Sands Beach, Pacific City, Shore Acres, Cape Perpetua, and Samuel Boardman State Park. When traveling from North to South one thing you will notice is the coast gets more rugged as you go. In fact, on the Southern Coast you will find very few sandy beaches and mainly rocky coastline. Here is our list of the 12 Most Beautiful Photography Locations on the Oregon Coast.

  1. Astoria-Megler Bridge

The first stop when traveling North to South on the Oregon Coast should be the Astoria Oregon. This historic settlement is near the mouth of the Columbia River and features many great photography locations including the Astoria Column, Columbia River South Jetty, and the Astoria-Megler Bridge. The bridge can be shot at sunrise or sunset, but if you’re looking for the perfect shot make sure you plan accordingly.

2. Peter Iredale Shipwreck

This classic photo spot is one of the most popular on the North Coast. The ship ran ashore in October of 1906 and has been stuck in the sand ever since. Fortunately, this location is easily accessible through Fort Steven State Park, but does get crowded on weekends. The best photos are usually taken at sunset, but if the tide is right, sunrise can work as well.

3. Ecola State Park

One of the most popular state parks on the Oregon Coast, Ecola features breathtaking views of Haystack Rock and Cannon Beach. Plus, Ecola has miles of hiking trails, beaches, and more. One of the most popular photography locations around means this place gets busy on weekends but don’t worry, there’s plenty of room to snap the perfect shot.

4. Haystack Rock

Officially the most photographed location in Oregon, Haystack Rock is a 235 foot sea stack located in Cannon Beach Oregon. Many have claimed it’s the third-largest intertidal sea stack in the world. This beautiful rock is best photographed during sunset, but once again can get very crowded! If you’re looking to snap the perfect shot without people then a dawn patrol session may be your best bet.

5. Oswald West State Park

Oswald West is truly one of the crown jewels of the Oregon Coast. Featuring a popular surfing location and miles of trails through old growth forests makes this a great place to look for the perfect shot! Oswald West is located just North of Manzanita Oregon on Highway 101 with multiple parking lots that provide access to the park. Morning photography is challenging due to the Coast Range mountains to the east, but mid-day and sunset provide many great opportunities to capture the magic of the park.

6. Cape Kiwanda Pacific City Oregon

When it comes to picitureesqe photo locations, Cape Kiwanda is hard to beat! Located in Pacific City about 30 miles South of Tillamook, Cape Kiwanda provides multiple options to capture the perfect photo. This small community features multiple forms of recreation including surfing, boating, sand boarding, and more so it does get very busy on weekends. With that said, as long as you can find a parking spot, photographers will have plenty of scenic sites to shoot! The legendary sand formations and Haystack Rock are best at sunset and potentially at sunrise (if you get lucky).

7. Yaquina Head Lighthouse & Yaquina Bay Bridge

Continuing south on our journey we drive through Newport. This rustic coastal town features multiple locations for photographers. The first landmark you will pass is Yaquina Head Lighthouse State Park. This park features the Yaquina Head Lighthouse which is a classic photo location. As you continue south you will drive over the Yaquina Bay Bridge which is another popular spot. Your best bet to capture magic at the lighthouse will be at sunset while Yaquina Bay Bridge comes alive at sunrise. Make sure to get their early because the morning colors usually only last a few minutes!

8. Cape Perpetua Marine Garden

Just 6-miles south of Yachats you will drive by Cape Perpetua State Park. This extremely popular roadside attraction features iconic natural wonders including Thor’s Well and Spouting Horn. There’s also multiple hiking trails that allow you to get a birds eye view of the beautiful coastline. Due to the Coast Range mountains to the east, Cape Perpetura is best photographed during sunset. If you’re looking for the perfect shot of Thor’s Well there’s also tidal factors to consider, but when the stars align you can definitely capture a magical image.

9. Hecta Head Lighthouse

Hecta Heat Lighthouse is one of 12 scenic lighthouses along the Oregon Coast. Located just 13 North of Florence, this lighthouse is best photographed during sunset. There is a great viewpoint right along highway 101 plus visitor access right up to the lighthouse itself, gives you many great locations to grab the perfect snap.

10. Shore Acres State Park

Shore Acres State Park is located 25 miles West from Coos Bay Oregon. The park is located well removed from highway 101 which keeps the crowds down. This scenic shoreline is a must see area of the coast, but is best viewed in the winter months when the waves hit the rocks and kick up massive ocean waves. If you’re looking for the perfect photo plan your trip in the winter months when the swell is 10 or more feet.

11. Myers Creek Beach

Drive 21 miles south of Gold Beach and you will reach Pistol River State Scenic Viewpoint and Myers Creek Beach. This gorgeous stretch of Highway 101 is known for it’s rugged coastline and jaw-dropping long exposure shots. The perfect curve in the road along with scenic rocks in the background. This photo really doesn’t do the area justice, but will give you a glimpse into the rugged scenic landscape.

12. Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor

Lucky for you we saved the best for last! Without a doubt, the Samuel H. Boardman Scenic area is home to the most breathtaking landscapes on the entire Oregon Coast. The 12-mile long scenic corridor is packed with dozens of jaw-dropping photo locations including Secret Beach, Natural, Bridge, Indian Sands, and more. Plus, due to its isolation from the big population centers the park is relatively uncrowded making it the perfect spot to go exploring!

Seaside Oregon is a small beach town about 70 miles from Portland Oregon. Considered the original Oregon Coast resort destination by many, Seaside continues to be one of the most popular travel destinations in Oregon. During the summer months tourists from around the Pacific Northwest head to the coast and pack the beaches. As longtime Seaside residents, we have had the opportunity to take hundreds of amazing Seaside photos. In this blog I wanted to share a few of our favorite landscape photos that we have taken over the years.

This incredible photo was taken by Brit Morrisey with a Canon DSLR. During the winter months the tourists go home and nature takes the beaches back. The Oregon Coast is known for its high-winds and heavy rain during the fall, winter, and early spring. As you can see from this photo the wind has created a unique wave texture in the sand that is undisturbed by foot prints.

Samuel Boardman State Park and Scenic Corridor is located on the Southern Oregon Coast.  A few miles South of Gold Beach and North of Brookings, Samuel Boardman features some of the most beautiful coastline in the entire Pacific Northwest including dozens of different beaches and viewpoints.  The Morrisey Productions crew recently embarked on road trip to capture footage with our new DJI Inspire Raw 4k Drone.  We also recently acquired a new wide angle lens for our Cannon 5D camera that we wanted to test out as well.  Our adventure began in Medford Oregon where we captured some breathtaking footage of the Table Rocks.  This location is just outside of Medford and steeped with lore due to the fact that a giant battle with Native American Indians took place on top of the flat rock bluff.  From there we traveled West down the Redwoods Highway and through Jedidiah Smith State Park until we ended up on the Northern tip of the California Coast.  After a brief pause to check the surf in Crescent City, we started traveling north up Highway 101 until we reached the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor.  This area is without a doubt one of the most scenic areas I have ever scene, in fact, the beach in which this photo was taken is one of my all time favorite places on earth.  Known to some as “secret beach” this location is about a 1.5 mile hike from the road and is well worth the trip.  While at Samuel Boardman State Park we were able to catch some amazing drone aerial footage that we will release at some point in the future.  Check out our previous Oregon Coast video to see a sample of our work.

The Peter Iredale Ship crashed in 1906 near the Mouth of the Columbia.  The crash site is located in Fort Stevens State Park near Warrenton Oregon.  The ship was never removed from the beach and has been slowly decomposing ever since.  The Peter Iredale ship Wreck on the Oregon Coast has become a popular tourist destination for both photographers and sightseers.  The best way to access the site of the shipwreck is to turn of Highway 101 at Warrenton heading West towards the ocean.  From there, find your way to Fort Stevens State Park and then simply follow the signs to the crash site.  As a local Oregon Coast photographer I decided to capture my version of this iconic structure.  While we were at the crash location we also filmed a few clips with our DJI Phantom Drone and Hero Go Pro 4k Camera.  The footage has not been released yet, you can see other amazing Oregon landmarks in our Oregon Coast Drone Video.  Our passion is to capture the scenic beauty of the Pacific Northwest in our unique way.  The State of Oregon has so much to offer landscape photographers that it never gets old capturing it’s unique and rugged beauty.  The Morrisey Productions crew is currently working on a new drone video that will feature locations from the mouth of the Columbia River to as far south as Brookings.  We recently upgraded all our camera gear including purchasing the new DJI Inspire 2 Drone capable of shooting 4k Raw Footage taking our production quality to a new level.  Check out Morrisey Production YouTube Channel to see more incredible videos.  peter-iredale-shipwreck-fort-stevens-park-oregon 5616x3744picture-of-peter-iredale-shipwreck-oregon-coast 5198x3744

Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach Oregon is the most photographed place on the Oregon Coast.  This 235 foot sea stack is the 3rd largest intertidal “structure” in the world according to Wikipedia.  Tourists from around the planet converge on Cannon Beach to photograph and observe the unique sea birds, crabs, and star fish that inhabit this area.  The Morrisey Productions has been perfecting our nighttime photography skills and decided to capture the Milky Way Galaxy over the iconic rock.  Shooting photography at night can be tricky and you must use a long exposure technique to allow enough light into the picture.  We also used an iPhone app that gives us the precise location of the Milky Way Galaxy so we could frame the shot correctly.  The next photo was taken the same night but we positioned the Milky Way Galaxy directly over Haystack Rock.
Haystack Rock Oregon Coast Milky Way Galaxy
This almost gave the illusion that the starts were shooting out of the top of the Rock which I thought was cool.  Nighttime photography can be very challenging but with the help of technology you can capture some pretty amazing photos.  This photo was taken near the summit of Angora Peak and during the month of August. Oregon Coast Milky Way Galaxy Angora Peak
The next photo is a unique angle of Haystack Rock taken with a DJI Phantom drone and Go Pro Hero 4k Camera.  This picture is actually a screen capture of a video we shot here in Cannon Beach and the full version will be released soon with our Oregon Coast Drone adventure video.

Here is a teaser we filmed displaying the natural beauty of Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach Oregon filmed by a drone.
Morrisey Productions mission is to bring you the best videos, aerial videos, and landscape photography in Oregon.  We live on the Oregon Coast and travel the entire Pacific Northwest trying to capture the most scenic images we can.  If you love beach photos check out our Seaside Oregon Photography video or if you prefer the mountains then watch our Oregon Coast Range drone video.  We are currently backpacking around the Northwest with our Cannon 5D camera and DJI Phantom shooting the most scenic locations we can fine. You can also follow the Morrisey Productions crew on social media at the Seaside Oregon Instagram or the Morrisey Video Production Page.
Over the years we have captured some amazing landscape photography in Seaside Oregon.  Usually these photos are posted on our website, Instagram, and Facebook.  I decided to edit a short video together showcasing our photography for the YouTube community.  As a long time Seaside resident, I get tired of seeing the same photo of Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach over and over.  The Oregon Coast is a beautiful place and there’s so much more to see.  In this video we decided to focus on our Seaside Oregon Photography.  Our landscape photos have been picked up by Best of Oregon, Visit Portland, and many other big Instagram channels across the State of Oregon.  We decided to include a bonus time-lapse and drone video at the end.  Want to see more of our work?  Visit the Morrisey Productions Portfolio page to see more videos, photography, and drone videogrpahy.  We are currently working on an Oregon adventure video filmed entirely with our DJI Phantom Drone and GoPro Hero 4 Camera that will be released soon.

This photo was taken at Ecola State Park otherwise known as “Indian Beach” near Cannon Beach Oregon.  This is one of my favorite beaches on the North Oregon Coast.  The lands for Ecola were purchased between 1932 to 1978 from the Federal Government and private land owners.  The park charges a fee to enter and has a Cannon Beach viewpoint and a drive in beach access.  Within Ecola State Park you can find old growth Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock, Seagulls, Elk, Deer, and tons of other wildlife.  During the summer months Indian Beach serves as a popular surfing destination for those willing to brave the cold Pacific Ocean waters.  The Oregon Beach Bill was passed in 1967 session of the Oregon Legislature which basically made all 363 miles of beaches public land.  The Morrisey Productions crew also filmed this aerial drone video of Ecola State Park.
As you can see from this aerial footage the Oregon Coast is one of the most scenic places on earth.

Oregon based video production and photography company Morrisey Productions recently embarked on a backpacking trip to Angora Peak Summit in the Coast Range Mountains of Oregon.  Our mission was to use our DJI Phantom Drone to capture mountain top footage for the Oregon Adventure Video we are producing that will be released in late summer.  When we film drone videos we also like to take some landscape photography during the sunrise and sunsets.  The first image was captured on the highest rock we could climb on without climbing gear.  Angora Peak is actually multiple peaks that span across a long mountain ridge.  To the left of the photo you can see “Angora Pinnacle” which is about 1/2 mile east of the main summit.  The rock i’m standing on in the photo is not the actual summit, but was one of the best viewpoints.  The true summit of Angora is covered in tree’s which block the view for the most part.  There is also another peak you can see behind me in the picture called “Revenge of Angora” which looked nearly impossible to climb without climbing gear but after reading online I found out there is a route along the west side of the rock.  The next time we climb Angora we are going to attempt to get to the top of “Revenge of Angora” for a photo.  After many trips to various peaks in the Coast Mountain Range we have built up a large collection of Oregon landscape photos and are now ready to start selling prints.  Soon we will have a shopping cart on our website where you can buy our prints online and have them shipped directly to you.  If your interested in our video production, aerial videography, or landscape photography services contact us at our website.
